Ocean Fields

These objects were produced during my residency in Longquan, China and have been installed as part of my show, Sound of Sugar: Currents of Empire, and in the pre-congress residents' exhibition in Taoxichuan's Main Art Gallery. Ocean Fields honours the two to three month voyage of indentured Indians across the Kali Pani (Indian Ocean) in the 19th century to replace those who were enslaved on sugar plantations in the Carribean. Joining Chinese migrants after abolition, these laborers signed contracts of indentureship, often unable to read them and unaware of the years of hard labour and harsh conditions they would face upon arrival.
