Goddess
The Goddess series was catalyzed by my discovery of a 5,000-year-old petroglyph in southern Ireland while on an artist residency in the fall of 2023. I had travelled there to connect more deeply with my mother's ancestors, who farmed flax before the Great Famine. Encountering the prehistoric rock carving within a boulder field of ancient marked stones awakened an unexpected sense of continuity with those who had walked this landscape thousands of years before. As I sketched and responded to its forms, I found myself resonating with the feminine, drawn toward the archetypal energies of the goddess. A distinctive circumscribed figure-eight motif, newly revealed as the surrounding peat receded, inspired my first figurative sculptures in the female form. The works with bronze and copper patina extend the dialogue between my maternal Irish ancestry and my paternal Indo-Caribbean heritage, bringing together two ancestral lineages through material, memory, and form.
