RECLAIMED: Indo-Caribbean HerStories

Gardiner Museum May 4-August 27, 2023. This mixed-media ceramic-based exhibition illuminates the power, courage and strength of Indo-Caribbean women, past and present. Through a feminist lens, the exhibition narrates the little-known histories of Indo-indentureship in the mid 19th and early 20th centuries through to the women of today. The installations include a wall-mounted set of contemporary portraits on porcelain, lit from behind, depicting Indo-Caribbean women with portraits of a female ancestor; a collage of “Coolie Belles” on porcelain window panes, inspired by turn-of-the-century postcards and ephemera; and a series of abstract figurative sculptures that respond to the work, amidst select pieces of the Indo-indentureship silver jewelry.
